NEW TRAILER: The Dark Knight

A brand new trailer for the upcoming "The Dark Knight" movie has just emerged, and Week in Rewind obtained it. It's fantastic. If you haven't been excited about this movie before, check out the latest trailer below.

"The Dark Knight" opens wide on July 18, 2008.

NEW TRAILER: Will Smith in "Hancock"

The new Will Smith movie, "Hancock," opens July 2, 2008. It features Smith as a drunk superhero who pulls his life together just when he's needed most.

Does this mean he can tackle his 12-step program with one effortless leap? Not quite.

The official plot synopsis is here:

"There are heroes... there are superheroes... and then there's Hancock. With great power comes great responsibility -- everyone knows that -- everyone, that is, but Hancock. Edgy, conflicted, sarcastic, and misunderstood, Hancock's well-intentioned heroics might get the job done and save countless lives, but always seem to leave jaw-dropping damage in their wake. The public has finally had enough -- as grateful as they are to have their local hero, the good citizens of Los Angeles are wondering what they ever did to deserve this guy. Hancock isn't the kind of man who cares what other people think -- until the day that he saves the life of PR executive Ray Embrey, and the sardonic superhero begins to realize that he may have a vulnerable side after all. Facing that will be Hancock's greatest challenge yet -- and a task that may prove impossible as Ray's wife, Mary, insists that he's a lost cause."

The official trailer is below:

NEW TRAILER: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2

The release date for the upcoming sequel to "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants," which is creatively titled "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2," isn't exactly promising. In fact, it might be a bit revealing about how the studio, Warner Bros., views the film.

The film will be released wide on Aug. 8, 2008. The trouble is that August tends to be a time when Hollywood dumps its worst movies before gearing up for the better films that extend into the fall. Worse, it was widely rumored that America Ferrera wanted nothing to do with the film, but did so because she had signed a contract to do so.

I did like the first film, though (a review is here), so, we'll see how this goes down. On that note, don't be surprised if somebody in the sequel loses their pants. Has to happen.

The official synopsis is here:

"Based on Ann Brashares’ best-selling series of novels, “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2” catches up with four lifelong friends whose story began with “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.” Now in college and embarking on separate paths for the first time, each will feel the freedom, separation, love, and challenging life lessons that mark their individual journeys toward adulthood. Though miles and worlds apart, they strive to stay in touch and share their new experiences and triumphs with heart and humor and, now more than ever, come to value the immeasurable power of their friendship."

The official trailer is below:

NEW TRAILER: The Spirit

For me, this is one of 2009's most-anticipated films. It's called "The Spirit" and it comes from Frank Miller, director of "Sin City," which I loved.

The film opens wide on Jan. 16, 2009, and it stars Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Eva Mendez, among a host of others.

See many full-sized production photos here.

The official plot synopsis is here:

"Adapted from the Will Eisner's graphic novels, "The Spirit" tells the story of a man who fakes his own death and fights crime from the shadows of Central City. The Octopus -- who kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face -- has other plans. He's going to wipe out the entire city. The Spirit tracks this coldhearted killer from the city's rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront...all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill the masked crusader."

The teaser trailer is below:

NEW TRAILER: Mongol

Sergie Bodrov's new movie, "Mongol," has been making the rounds at several international and national film festivals. It opens in limited release on June 6, 2008.

Judging by the trailer, which is below, the movie looks beautiful and early reviews have been positive. Here's hoping it receives a wider release.

The official synopsis is here:

"Award-winning Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov (PRISONER OF THE MOUNTAINS) illuminates the life and legend of Genghis Khan in his stunning historical epic, MONGOL. Based on leading scholarly accounts and written by Bodrov and Arif Aliyev, MONGOL delves into the dramatic and harrowing early years of the ruler who was born as Temudgin in 1162. As it follows Temudgin from his perilous childhood to the battle that sealed his destiny, the film paints a multidimensional portrait of the future conqueror, revealing him not as the evil brute of hoary stereotype, but as an inspiring, fearless and visionary leader. MONGOL shows us the making of an extraordinary man, and the foundation on which so much of his greatness rested: his relationship with his wife, Borte, his lifelong love and most trusted advisor."

The trailer is below:

NEW TRAILER: Finding Amanda

Matthew Broderick's new movie, "Finding Amanda," opens June 27, 2008, a full month after his wife, Sarah Jessica Parker, has steamrolled over him and everyone in her path with the release of Sex and the City. I'm down with "Sex." As for "Amanda," not so much.

The official synopsis of "Amanda" is here:

"From director Peter Tolan, creator of the hit television series Rescue Me, comes Finding Amanda, a hilarious and heartbreaking autobiographical comedy about the compulsions we can’t shake, and the unlikely lengths we’ll go to while trying."

So...not much of an official synopsis! Let's hope the movie tries for a bit more.

NEW TRAILER: Bridehead Revisited

Above is a photo of Emma Thompson from the upcoming, July 25, 2008 limited release of Bridehead Revisited, which is based on Evelyn Waugh's scathing novel.

The trailer, which is below, looks hugely promising--far more involving than Atonement, which I thought was marginal, at best.

The official synopsis for Brideshead is here:

"A heartbreaking romantic epic, “BRIDESHEAD REVISITED” tells an evocative story of forbidden love and the loss of innocence set in the pre-WWII era. In the film, Charles Ryder (Matthew Goode, “Match Point,” “The Lookout”) becomes entranced with the noble Marchmain family, first through the charming and provocative Sebastian Marchmain (Ben Whishaw, “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer”), and then his sophisticated sister, Julia (Hayley Atwell, “Cassandra’s Dream” and the upcoming “The Duchess”). The rise and fall of Charles’ infatuations reflect the decline of a decadent era in England between the wars. Academy Award-winner Emma Thompson co-stars as Lady Marchmain. The film, based on Evelyn Waugh’s acclaimed novel is adapted for the screen by multiple BAFTA Award-winner Andrew Davies (“Bridget Jones Diary,” “Bleak House”) and Jeremy Brock (“The Last King of Scotland”) and directed by Julian Jarrold (“Becoming Jane”)."

NEW TRAILER: The Incredible Hulk

I still think this looks incredibly cheesy, with some particularly obvious (rotten!) special effects dragging down the production. But here is the new trailer for The Incredible Hulk, nevertheless:

Trailer: The Life Before Her Eyes

Release Date:

April 18, 2008 in NY/LA and wide on April 25th

Studio Synopsis:

Imaginative, impetuous and wild Diana (Evan Rachel Wood) can’t wait for her adult life to begin. Whiling away the final days of high school in the lush springtime, Diana tests her limits with sex and drugs as her more conservative friend Maureen (Eva Amurri) watches with concern. But Diana’s aura of invincibility is shattered when a senseless act of violence erupts at school, forever changing the lives of the two best friends.

Fifteen years later, a grown Diana (Uma Thurman) is still trying to come to terms with the traumatic events of that fateful day.

On the surface, the adult Diana has made a picture perfect life for herself. She’s still living in the sleepy Connecticut suburb she grew up in with her husband Paul, a professor at the local college. Her beautiful young daughter, Emma, is smart and creative, and possesses a fiercely independent streak reminiscent of her mother. But all is not well—as the anniversary of her adolescent trauma approaches, the darkness that Diana has tried to escape closes in. Meanwhile, her husband has become increasingly absent, her daughter has taken to hiding from teachers, and worst of all, Diana’s own grip on reality is starting to falter.

Moving seamlessly through both stages of Diana’s evolution, THE LIFE BEFORE HER EYES delves deep into the crossroads that we all face -- where a simple decision can change the course of everything to come, and where a lifetime can be encapsulated in a single moment. With THE LIFE BEFORE HER EYES, Vadim Perelman, director of the acclaimed HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG, has established himself as one of America’s greatest young directors of serious, probing drama.

Midnight Meat Train: Delayed?

Say it isn't so!

The folks over at Shock Til You Drop are reporting that Clive Barker's "Midnight Meat Train" has been knocked out of its May 16, 2008 opening. Apparently, official word came to them from Lionsgate, the film's distributor. That said, the film's production company, Lakeshore Entertainment, still lists the release date as May 16.

So, what gives? Who knows? This is one of the best B-movie horror titles ever. If the movie is a dog and they push it back into the heat of August, which has long since been Hollywood's dumping ground, you know the meat on that train is spoiled.

Madagascar 2: The Crate Escape Trailer

This November, the sequel to Madagascar hits theaters, not that that's any reason to cheer, as the original film was a bust. (Read the review here.) Below is an odd trailer/promo for the movie with Ben Stiller, which makes it looks, well, equally not so hot.
